WORKS ON PAPER
In 2022, Smith introduced works on paper into her practice, influenced by encounters with Salvador Dalí’s work and Isamu Noguchi’s exhibition Noguchi at the Barbican. These experiences prompted her to consider how sculptural thinking could extend beyond three-dimensional form.
Rather than treating drawing and printmaking as separate disciplines, Smith approaches works on paper as extensions of sculpture. They develop through multiple processes: observing and drawing finished sculptures, tracing fragments of discarded plaster moulds, printing directly with remnants of clay, or translating digital scans into new compositions.
Smith considers these works as sculptures in two dimensions, where traces of her physical and digital processes take on new forms. Their introduction expanded her sculptural language beyond the object and became an integral part of her practice.
