A Box with No Edges explores the tension between perception and identity, reflecting on the ways individuals and social structures attempt to contain the shifting nature of who we are. Drawing on Smith’s experience of feeling categorised by others, the work considers the quiet refusal to internalise imposed definitions.
The sculpture resists fixed form, existing in tension between linear structure and fluid movement. While the work sits across five defined planes, it simultaneously twists into the round, refusing to conform to a singular sculptural canon or visual language. In doing so, it inhabits a space that remains open, unstable, and unresolved, reflecting a desire to exist beyond prescribed structures and expectations.
